Maple Grove Crimson Defense Rises in Win Over Edina Hornets

Sep 04, 2015 04:00PM ● By Doug Erlien
It wasn’t the start to the game that Maple Grove Senior High Crimson Head Coach Matt Lombardi was looking for, yet his team, led by Senior Isaac Collins, ran away from Edina High School 34-16 on Friday, Sept. 4. Maple Grove had a punt blocked on their first possession, then Junior Brad Davison threw an interception on the second Crimson drive. Through all of the failures on the offensive side of the ball, the defense began to show signs of why Lombardi feels it is his best since arriving five years ago.

After the Hornets took over at the 14-yard line, the Crimson defense held the Hornets to a field goal. Then Senior Isaac Collins took over, scoring the first of three touchdowns giving the Crimson a 6-3 lead after the first quarter. Edina answered in the second quarter when running back Doma Morris scampered 65 yards for a Hornets touchdown. The Crimson answered less than two minutes later when Davison found Will Ampe on a comeback route. Ampe dodged defenders and found the end zone and the Crimson would never trail again. After forcing a three and out, Collins scored his second touchdown from 46 yards with 1:44 left before halftime.

The Hornets scored on their first possession of the second half to cut the lead to 20-16, but the Crimson answered quickly as Davison found tight end Will Reul for a 28-yard touchdown extending the Crimson lead to 27-16. Collins would cap the scoring with a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter, his eighth of the season.

The Crimson (2-1) now play tough
road games the next two weeks against top ranked Eden Prairie High School followed by a trip to Lombardi’s old stomping grounds Wayzata High School
