Five months after announcing they were bringing a taproom to Maple Grove, OMNI Brewing Co. will open its doors on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2015. The 70-seat brewery is awaiting the final touches before the grand opening that has been two years in the making.
The OMNI sign above the bar has been hung, the glasses that will provide the
substance are ready, the passion to their customers and
the dream of co-owners Justin Walsh, Zach Ward, and Steve Hayes is becoming a reality.
The vision for OMNI Brewing Co. started more than two years ago when Walsh and Ward crafted the idea to open their own brewery. Initially, that vision was a little smaller, a nano-brewery which quickly expanded into the taproom of today. Ward, a self-professed beer nerd and student of the trade, is the head brewer. Walsh, an accountant, handles business finances while Hayes uses his experience in marketing to help get OMNI on the map. The three have teamed up to create the first taproom in the northwest metro.
When an original plan was to build a brewery in Medina fell through after a lack of suitable space, the site search expanded to include Plymouth and Maple Grove. In April, OMNI found and purchased the 5,800 square-foot warehouse, once leased by Schwan’s Frozen Foods in northern Maple Grove off of Deerwood Lane.
After looking at the property for the first
time, they knew it was a fit.
“I didn’t see opening night,” Hayes said when talking about seeing the building the first time. "The logic of the location made sense, but there was a lot of work to be done. It’s a great location and foundation for the product and the brewery."
The last five months have been a whirlwind for Walsh, Ward, and Hayes as they
have passed inspections, received liquor license approval from the Maple Grove
City Council, and continue to march forward, making the dream a reality.
“The city has been phenomenal, fair, and supportive,” Hayes said. “At the end of the day, we want this to be a community treasure.”
Construction began in mid-June and with the help of nearly $45,000 raised in a Kickstarter campaign to finish the 70 seat, solar-powered taproom .
“It’s going to be good,” Hayes said. “I’m not nervous because of the response from the community." Through word of mouth, OMNI Brewing Co. boasts 3,200 likes on their Facebook page. An impressive number that has the trio excited for opening day and the potential for big things.
OMNI in Latin, means “all, every, of every kind.” Which is the vision for the
company which will boast a wide variety of craft beers.
“We wanted to build a taproom for everyone,” Hayes said. “A place where
everyone is welcome.”
