The Osseo Orioles football team picked the perfect time to put together a complete game in their 24-21 victory against Lakeville North High School in the state quarterfinal game Thursday, Oct. 29 in Eden Prairie.

The offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage and the defense, that a week ago didn’t force a Hopkins punt the entire game, frustrated the Lakeville Panthers with their quickness.

“They’ve been picked on the last few weeks,” said Head Coach Derrin Lamker. “Defense won  the game flat out, hands down.”

Lakeville North enjoyed a short lived lead after intercepting Osseo quarterback Malik Gaillard early in the first quarter. On the Orioles next possession, they drove the field, setting the tone offensively for the remainder of the game. Osseo was forced to settle for a 30-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3.

Orioles Senior Damario Armstrong was a force for Osseo on both sides of the ball. Armstrong brought in a deep catch on a key play that extended a second quarter drive, then hauled in an 8-yard fade route from Gaillard to extend the lead to 10-7 as the teams headed to the locker rooms at the half-time break.

“That was a top notch effort tonight,” Lamker said of Armstrong’s performance. “I was saying ‘just keep feeding him the ball’."

The second half was more of the same as the Orioles defense swarmed the Panthers including a pair of stands on fourth down and short yardage. Offensively, the Orioles continued to move the ball and put points on the board.

Leading 17-14, the Orioles defense forced the Panthers into a punt which was perfectly placed and downed at the Orioles two-yard line. With momentum tipping toward Lakeville North and nine minutes on the fourth quarter clock, the Orioles drove the length of the field and capped the 14-play drive with a Prince Kruah 4-yard touchdown. The score extended the lead to 24-14 with 3:32 left in the game.

The Panthers answered a little more than a minute later as they drove the field and pulled to within a field goal courtesy of a Drew Steward to David Lindstrand touchdown.

The Orioles made sure they wouldn’t get the ball back as they recovered the onside kick and watched as the final 2:29 melted off of the clock.

The Orioles advance to the Class 6A semi-finals and will face the winner of the Eden Prairie and Totino Grace game - played Friday, Oct. 30 at Osseo Senior High.
