The Maple Grove Senior High football team are back to the state semifinals following a workman like 32-14 win over Burnsville High School. The Crimson jumped on the Blaze quickly in the first quarter using Burnsville mistakes and a brisk south wind to gain a three score lead.
After forcing Burnsville to punt on their first series, the Crimson offense took over and didn’t
waste any time. Isaac Collins took the handoff on the first
play and sprinted his way to the end zone giving Maple Grove the lead. By the time the first quarter was over,
the Crimson found themselves up 17-0.
“I thought our offensive line really did a good job. They were a team that didn’t give up a lot of points,” said Crimson Head Coach Matt Lombardi. “I think we felt if we ran at them and stayed consistent, we could have some success.”
The Crimson churned yards on the ground led by Collins, as the senior rushed
for more than 190 yards and a pair of 30-yard touchdowns in the win. It was
junior quarterback Brad Davison who was able to add to the ground game, scoring
a pair of touchdowns in the victory.
“We added him as a run threat this week,” said Lombardi.
The top seed Crimson will face East Ridge High School Friday, Nov. 6 at Eden Prairie High School. The winner will play for the state championship at TCF Bank Stadium.
