“The conversation just started in a meeting,” Osseo Senior High Activities Director Bill Quan said. After the team traveled on the road for games in Minnetonka and Eden Prairie, the staff wanted to try to figure out a way to have the fan section representative of the student body for the final game of the season.
It started with several Osseo Senior High teachers and staff donating money to pay for tickets and buses for students to travel TCF Bank Stadium.
“I sent an email out to staff and, within the first hour, I think about $800 was raised to help our students to go experience a once in a lifetime opportunity - to be part of this community, to cheer on the football team,” he said.
Quan said he had initially hoped enough would be raised to help 50 students in need travel to the game on a bus plus $9 ticket.
“It doesn’t seem like much, but for some of these kids $9 is a big deal. Once they have a ticket, they still have to get down to TCF Bank Stadium,” said. For 50 students, the trip would costs around $800.
Then the word started to spread. Some of the staff put a call out on social media and a GoFundMe page was created by the Osseo Football Booster Club.
“The next thing you know, a lot of money was raised to help out our students,” Quan said. “To see our teachers, our community step up has really been fun.”
Enough funds were raised for four student fan buses, plus extra to help with expenses for the football team, according to Quan. In the end, any student that wanted to be part of the state experience has an opportunity to go.
If the excitement of the Friday win last week wasn’t enough for the Oriole community, the momentum has continued to carry into this week before the Prep Bowl. “The feel and the excitement around the building after winning that game was huge,” Quan said.
