Osseo 1986 A Look Back

Nov 13, 2015 02:37AM ● By Doug Erlien
The last time the Osseo Orioles played for a state football championship, Ronald Reagan was in his second term as President of the United States, Bon Jovi was at the top of the Billboard charts with You Give Love a Bad Name and current head coach Derrin Lamker was a 12-year old quarterback drawing up plays in the dirt in the backyard.

The Orioles limped their way into the playoffs after losing back-to-back games to Bloomington Jefferson and Park Center. They defeated Blaine in a hard fought first round section game and then rolled over Forest Lake, Moorhead and Alexandria earning a trip to the Metrodome.

The newspaper clippings may have turned a shade of yellow 29 years later, but the memories for then Junior Tight End C.J. Lyngen are as if they took place yesterday.

“The one thing I think I remember the most is how it didn’t matter if you were the best player or if you didn’t see the field, everyone was kind of the same,” said Lyngen.

A true team defined by the senior leadership that included everyone and was led by John Hansen, the long-time head coach who now has his name proudly attached to the field he once coached.

The Orioles were defeated in the championship game by a talented team from Apple Valley.
The two teams had met earlier in the season with the Orioles pulling out a 14-6 victory when the Eagles were ranked number one in the state.
Like this year’s team, the 1986 team energized the community and student body and there was a definite buzz around the halls at Osseo High.

“The school was just crazy,” said Lyngen. “They were selling t-shirts and that was at a time where there wasn’t all this apparel. The school that week was just incredible.”

It wasn’t just the school. The community rallied around the team as well.

“From George at George’s Barber Shop to everyone else on Main Street it was pretty fun,” recalled Lyngen. “Everyone would come out to all the games. That was just the pinnacle of the season.”
