Maple Grove girls basketball head coach Mark Cook knew walking into his team’s season opening game against second ranked Minnetonka that his team was about to grow up. The Skippers looked every bit the part of a championship caliber team in their 69-45 win and despite the score, the young Crimson were able to pull some positives out of a double digit loss.

“Some of our young kids got their feet wet,” Cook said. “That needed to happen. They did that against a top level opponent.”

After trailing 19-2, the Crimson mounted a first half comeback getting as close as 19-14 before the Skippers closed the half on a 20-8 run to take a 17 point lead to the half.

The Skippers started the second half on a 19-3 run that included 11 straight Maple Grove possessions in which they failed to score.

The Skippers possess an impressive combination of length and strength and defensively, made things difficult for the young Crimson. Skipper post Lizzie Odegard who battled foul trouble all game led Minnetonka with 15 points while Wisconsin Badger commit Courtney Fredrickson finished with 14 points.

Crimson senior Mackenzie Barta led all players with 16 hard earned points, the only player to reach double digits for Maple Grove.
