Maple Grove Girls Hockey Falls to Minnetonka

Dec 17, 2015 10:54PM ● By Doug Erlien
Maple Grove Senior High School Crimson Girls Hockey Head Coach Amber Hegland knew heading into her team’s 3-1 loss to Minnetonka High School what her team was in for. The number two ranked Skippers play a fast, physical, and disciplined brand of hockey that has them undefeated on the season.

“We thought that it was going to be a close game,” Hegland said. “A one to two goal game towards the end.”

Minnetonka jumped on top early in the first period when Kippin Keller beat Crimson goaltender Coco Francis. The Skippers were able to hold the puck in the offensive zone and pressure Maple Grove all game. The Crimson would tie things up as Tina Kampa blasted a shot past Skipper goalie Tatyana Delaittre on the power play.

The Skippers continued to pressure the Crimson, but midway through the second period with Maple Grove on the power play Keller found the puck on her stick on a breakaway and she took advantage of the turnover for her second goal and in the process regaining the lead for good 2-1. Emma Bigham would add a third goal for Minnetonka with four seconds left in the second period for the final score of the game. Minnetonka out shot the Crimson 32-16.

Up Next:
The Crimson (8-2-3) have games against Benilde St. Margaret’s and Eden Prairie before the holiday break.

Crimson Three Stars:
Coco Francis - The junior goalie turned back 29 of 32 shots and seemed to have Skippers buzzing around her net constantly during the game.

Tina Kampa - Kampa’s second goal of the season was the lone Crimson tally of the night.

Mia Martinez - Martinez tallied the only assist on Kampa’s goal.
