When it comes to rivalries in high school sports, few are as fun to follow as Maple Grove and Osseo. Separated by four miles, the teams have provided fans with memorable games in all sports throughout the years. Friday night’s basketball double header at Osseo Senior High School was no different. The girls took the floor first and needed overtime to decide the contest with Osseo pulling out a 49-47 victory.
The Crimson did a great job defensively against the Orioles in the half court,
but it was Osseo’s ability to take advantage of Maple Grove's 30 plus turnovers to create
points in transition. Trailing 25-20 at halftime, the Orioles changed up their
defensive plan and turned to a zone defense trapping the Crimson ball handlers.
“When we start getting down in games and unfortunately that’s been a trend the last few games,” Osseo Girls Basketball Head Coach Jen Moen said. “That trapping zone defense, our kids kind of thrive on that.”
The game provided a matchup of two of the best players in the state in Osseo’s Kiara Russell and Maple Grove’s Mackenzie Barta. Russell finished the game with a game high 22 points and did her part on the defensive end of the floor holding Barta to just nine points.
Both teams had opportunities to win the game late in regulation, the best with Maple Grove’s final possession. Senior Allie Schmidt had the ball go through her hands on a perfectly executed inbounds play which would have resulted in a wide open layup.
The Crimson (7-6) hit the road Tuesday, Jan. 19 and will face Anoka. They return home Friday, Jan. 22 and will face Park Center.
Osseo (12-2) take sole possession of first place in the Northwest Suburban’s west division and have won 11 straight games. The Orioles will travel to Elk River Tuesday, Jan. 19 and return home Friday, Jan. 22 to face Totino-Grace.
