The Osseo Orioles boys basketball team remained undefeated with a 78-75 hard fought victory over Maple Grove in front of a near capacity crowd at Osseo Senior High School. The prime time match-up between the teams, both ranked in the top five, saw the Crimson lead for most of the contest before the Orioles pressure defense wore Maple Grove down.

“That was our goal,” Osseo Head Coach Tim Theisen said. “In the first half, we couldn’t do that because it was a half-court game. We only scored 29 points, that’s not our style. Our style is at least 40-45 points per half. We instituted our will in the second half and it kind of showed.”

The Orioles, ranked No. 4 and undefeated at 15-0, defeated their third top ten opponent in the past two weeks and has earned their spot in conversations as a top team in the state.

After the first half saw the Crimson extend a lead into double-digits, the Orioles pulled to within nine at the break 38-29. Maple Grove extended the lead to 44-31 on a 6-2 run to start the second half before the Orioles made their comeback.

With leading scorer Zach Theisen held in check with just seven points, junior forward John Bezdicek came off the bench for 17 points, including three three-pointers to lead the way for the Orioles. With shots beginning to fall, the defense began to wear the Crimson down.

Maple Grove junior guard Brad Davison led all scorers with 35 points. Osseo's Allan Anderson finished with 16 points while Damario Armstrong added 14 including a monster two hand dunk that sent the home crowd into a frenzy late in the game.

The Crimson (13-2) host Anoka and Rogers on Tuesday, Jan. 19 and Wednesday, Jan. 20 before hitting the road Friday, Jan 22 against Park Center.

Osseo faces Minneapolis South Monday, Jan. 18 at Minneapolis Roosevelt, then the Orioles host Elk River on Tuesday, Jan. 19 before traveling to Totino-Grace on Friday, Jan 22.
