Maple Grove Senior High Boys Basketball team's win over Rogers High School in a rare Wednesday night tilt was big.

In a huge 84-60 win over a section opponent, 6’10 senior center Reed Nikko's efforts was one of the highlights of the evening - pouring in 22 points, his biggest offensive output of the season.

“Reed’s got to give us a little bit more,” Head Coach Nick Schroeder said. “Especially when their biggest guy is 6’4. Even if he draws two guys and opens things up for our guards, that’s what he has to do and he did that tonight.”

Nikko finished the game with six rebounds and seven blocks, in addition to his game high 22 points. His effort opened things up for everyone else.

“I think I’m the type of player who plays better when I get a shot to fall earlier in the game,” Nikko said. “On a night like tonight and later in the year too, getting off to a quick start and getting that momentum is huge.”

Last week, junior guard Brad Davison scored 30 plus points in three games, this week has seen a more balanced attack. Davison, who is closing in on the Maple Grove career scoring record, finished with 21 points. Fellow guard Jack Hutchinson hit critical shots from deep in the first half. With the Crimson up 38-28, Bubba Horton forced a Rogers turnover as time melted off the first half clock and then beat the buzzer with a deep three-pointer to give the Crimson a 41-28 lead at the break.

Maple Grove repeated their performance in the second half, getting Nikko open early and setting up the guards and wings for open shots from the outside. Taron Pickford and Horton finished with nine points each and Jared Martinson provided a spark on both ends of the floor finishing with six points in the win.

The Crimson travel to Park Center Friday, Jan. 22 to face the Pirates, a team they defeated 68-60 earlier in the season.
