The Crimson put every facet of the game to work, picking up a pair of goals from junior forward Taylor Wente and had a solid performance from junior goaltender Coco Francis in the win.
Wente and the Crimson started fast scoring, with just under three minutes into the contest putting Maple Grove up 1-0. The scoring continued in the first period as senior forward Claire McLean shot a seemingly harmless shot from just outside the zone toward Panthers goaltender Brittney Buhl. Buhl misplayed the puck and it ended up in the net for a 2-0 Crimson advantage.
The second period served much of the same as Maple Grove controlled play and tallied twice more to take a commanding 4-0 lead heading into the final period. Goals by sophomore forward Maria Martinez and senior Hailey Herdine paced the Crimson attack. On the other end, Francis saw more action and kept the Panthers off the scoreboard midway through the period with a sliding kick save that would have changed the momentum of the game.
The Crimson played smart defensive hockey in the third period and added to their lead on Wente’s second goal of the hockey game.
After the win Tuesday, the Maple Grove Girls Hockey team advances to the section championship game Friday, Feb. 12 at Roseville Ice Arena where they face the Centennial Cougars, who knocked off the Blaine Bengals in the second semifinal game.
