The Maple Grove boys hockey team saw their season come to an end in the Section 5AA championship game with a 6-3 loss to Anoka High School at Aldrich Arena in Maplewood Thursday, Feb. 25.

The Crimson fell behind in the first period when the Tornadoes scored 19 seconds apart to take a 2-0 lead. Maple Grove senior Sam Ross found the back of the net 37 seconds later to cut the lead in half as the teams headed to the locker rooms for the first intermission.

The second period belonged to Maple Grove as they scored two goals of their own as Jack Kelly and Tevin Neegard netted goals 24 seconds apart to take a one goal lead. Back to back penalties doomed the Crimson as the Tornadoes took advantage on the power play. The Crimson had three breakaway opportunities two that failed to click and another that clanged off the crossbar.

The third period belonged to Anoka. Tristan Mirovsky scored his second goal of the game just under two minutes into the period and Reese Grailer added another at 5:10 of the final frame to put the Tornadoes into the state tournament for the first time since 2003.

Maple Grove finished with a record of 14-14 and upset top seed Blaine in the semifinal round to advance to the championship game.

Game Notes:
The Crimson went 0-6 on the power play.
Crimson goaltender senior Brady Goodman stopped 20 of 25 shots he faced.
Freshman Trevor Janicke, who has
verbally committed to Notre Dame, picked up a pair of assists in the game.
