“Park Center scares you. They are an athletic team, they have good shooters,” Osseo Head Coach Tim Theisen said. “We knew it was going to be a tough game. Every one of us did.”
The Orioles led for the majority of the first half, but Park Center’s Losini Kamara scored the final five points of the half to give the Pirates a 28-27 lead at the halftime break.
Senior Center Kameron Bettie led all scorers with 19 points on a night where the high powered Orioles offense couldn’t find a rhythm.
“Sure, it’s frustrating when you don’t hit a shot or you miss a layup, but the kids don’t let it get to them,” Theisen said.
After the Orioles extended the lead to 47-39, the Pirates wouldn’t go quietly and again cut the lead to three with less than 30 seconds left. A three-point opportunity to tie the game was missed and the Orioles hit free-throws down the stretch and winning the game 60-52.
It was the Osseo defense that held the Pirates to just 52 points and vaulted the Orioles into the section 5AAAA championship game on Friday night.
“In the end our defense was the main reason we got the ‘w’ tonight,” Theisen said.
The Orioles will face Mounds View on 7 p.m. Friday, March 4 at Rogers HighSchool. The Mustangs upset Champlin Park in the other semifinal contest.
