The Maple Grove Senior High Crimson boys basketball team punched their ticket to next week’s state tournament with a dominating 69-46 victory over the Elk River Elks on Thursday, March 3 at St. Michael-Albertville High School.

After a slow start, the Crimson were able to create some separation taking a five point lead to the halftime break.

“We weren’t playing great basketball,” Crimson Head Coach Nick Schroeder said. “We talked about getting back to what made us good and imposing our will the first five minutes and we did that.”

Junior Brad Davison led the way with 30 points for the Crimson.

“My teammates did a great job in the beginning keeping us going,” Davison said. “I didn’t start very well. It was my first time in a section championship game, so I had to get my feet wet.”

It didn’t take Davison long as he finished with 17 points in the first half. On the other end, the
Crimson put together a tremendous defensive effort led by senior center Reed Nikko who protected the middle and the rim.

The victory gives Maple Grove their first tournament appearance in five years.

"Seeing the clock run down, it reminds you of all the hard work you put in," Davison said. "Before the coaches came in I told my teammates we're not just playing to go to state, we're playing to have another week to play together."

Box Score:
Maple Grove: Taron Pickford 16; Ryan Bredensteiner 5; Jack Hutchinson 7; Bubba Horton 4; Brad Davison 30; Reed Nikko 7

Elk River: Wyatt Morrell 1; Blake Hills 7; Noah Weege 3; Matthew Keller 6; Jack Burger 1; Zekiel Delain 14; Trent Pink 12; Cameron Cotton 2
