In a letter posted to customers on the Sports Authority website, Chief Executive Officer Michael Foss wrote:
Sports Authority and its predecessor companies have been serving the sporting goods needs of our customers since 1919. It is with great sadness that we are intending to close all of our stores by the end of August.
We will be holding store closing sales at all of our locations that will allow you to take advantage of big discounts on great brands.
On behalf of the entire Sports Authority team, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to our customers for their years of loyalty. It has been a pleasure to serve you and your family.
The letter went on to outline additional deadlines for the stores loyalty program, credit cards, warranties, returns, and gift cards. As part of the store closing, the company indicated "everything now up to to 30% off" original ticketed price - although some exclusions apply and deals may vary from store to store.
The Minnesota Sports Authority store leases will be auctioned off in June, according to the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. Of the nine Minnesota locations, the Maple Grove location with 32,572 square feet has the highest base rent (per square foot), according to a A&G Realty Partners, currently with a lease expiring in January 2017.
