Updated: Indoor, Outdoor Pools at Community Center Reopen Aug. 4 after Closure

Aug 03, 2016 08:55AM ● Published by Wendy Erlien

The Maple Grove Community Center announced both the indoor and outdoor pool would be closed for the day Wednesday, Aug. 3 - possibly reopening Aug. 4 - after a notification was received from the Minnesota Department of of Health.

The following information was posted on the Maple Grove Community Center website page:

"On August 2, we were informed by the Minnesota Department of Health through Hennepin County Public Health Department that we have had two customers at the Maple Grove Community Center pools that were diagnosed with Cryptosporidium.

Cryptosporidium is a parasite that causes diarrheal illness call cryptosporidiosis.  It is one of the most common waterborne diseases in the United States and can be found in both drinking water and recreational water.

To make sure that there is no ongoing risk to our customers, we closed our pools and are currently treating the water based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

We plan to reopen the indoor and outdoor pools on Thursday, August 4th, but will do so only with the approval of the Hennepin County Public Health Department.

The safety of you and your children are our top priority. We appreciate your understanding of this situation and hope you feel that we have taken, and continue to take care of you and your family."

Updated 12:49 p.m. Aug. 3 - The Minnesota Department of Health, working with Hennepin County, "had two laboratory-confirmed cases of cryptosporidiosis who reported swimming at the pools at the facility in early to mid-July," according to Minnesota Department of Health Information Officer Doug Schultz. Symptoms began in mid-July, he said, "so they were diagnosed sometime after that and specimens collected and sent to us. Neither case required hospitalization."

"In order to ensure no ongoing risk, the pools were closed yesterday (Aug. 2) and hyperchlorinated. The investigation is ongoing at this time," Schultz said.

Updated 5:36 a.m Aug. 4 - According to the Maple Grove Community Center website, there will be no lap swimming from 6-7 a.m. However, "the pools will open at 7 a.m. August 4."
