Throughout the 50 minutes, Ruettiger wove his life story of being the underdog and never giving up on his dream of attending Notre Dame to play football for the Fighting Irish. He played one play in the only game of his career against Georgia Tech. He sacked the quarterback in the last 27 seconds of the game and was carried off the field on the shoulders of his teammates, the only time in school history that has taken place.
“I prepared my entire life for those 27 seconds,” Ruettiger said.
In preparing for his dream, he had plenty of people along the way that told him he was too small to make it. Similar to the Orioles football team that won the football title a year ago.
“I know you guys are state football champions.” Ruettiger said. “How do you take being a football champion and turn that into being a champion in life?”
Ruettiger continued to chase his dreams as he told the story of how he fought to get his life story, his message onto the big screen. In 1993, it finally happened as “Rudy” became a box office success. His message of dreaming and never giving up on your dream has inspired millions of people around the world.
“That’s the secret,” Ruettiger said. “You don’t know who you impacted and the people that you do, they remember what you’ve done. I think that’s better than getting to know me.”
After speaking, Ruettiger posed for pictures, answered questions, and continued to inspire those who wanted a few minutes.
“This is the magic of it,” Ruettiger said of his ability to motivate so many people. “You take one day, stay positive and that’s what happens."
"Rudy coming in and talking about having dreams and working hard to achieve those dreams to the Osseo community really connected with many of those in attendance," Osseo Senior High Activities Director Bill Quan said.
