The Maple Grove Crimson football team broke fall camp and will begin preparation for their opening game against district rival Osseo on Thursday, Sept. 1. While several new faces will be in the lineup when they face the Orioles, a familiar voice will be in the huddle as senior Brad Davison begins his third season as the Crimson quarterback.

“When you have a quarterback that has been there three years, at least the huddle is in control,” Crimson Head Coach Matt Lombardi said. “Our linemen need to step up, they have a long way to go. We’ve had Ben Shoults (Harvard) and Kayode Awosika (Buffalo) the last few years and we’ve been really blessed.”

While Lombardi knows his offensive line is a work in progress, Davison will key the Crimson offensive attack which has a bit of a new look.

“They had a good summer, I think,” Lombardi said. “They kind of know their roles and what they are good at. I think they understand how to space the field.”

On the other side of the ball, the Crimson are young, but Lombardi feels can come around.

“I think our ‘d’ is very raw, but I think they have some ability. In the long run, I think our ‘d’ can do some good things. They run well but are very young right now,” Lombardi said.

A season ago, the Crimson marched into the
state semi-finals for the second straight season. They found their identity against the then top ranked Eden Prairie when they outplayed the Eagles, but fell in a tough game.

“We left that field knowing what we were about and it took about four weeks,” Lombardi said. “It’s a work in progress, and it isn’t always week one and that’s what’s fun. You get those eight weeks and it’s a lot of development time and hopefully by the time you get to the playoffs you know who you are and are ready to roll.”

The Crimson's home schedule has the team battling against the top programs in the state. In addition to opening with defending class
6A champion Osseo, Wayzata, Eden Prairie and Prior Lake all make appearances at Crimson stadium.
