Maple Grove and Osseo Create One Sweet Rivalry

Aug 30, 2016 09:12PM ● By Doug Erlien
When the Maple Grove Crimson and Osseo Orioles take the field at Crimson Stadium 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, it will mark the 20th time the teams have met during the regular season.

In the previous 19 meetings, Maple Grove holds a 10-9 series edge, with the Orioles winning seven of the last eight meetings on the field. The Crimson were awarded a victory in 2012 when Osseo played the game with an ineligible player.

Maple Grove Senior High opened in 1996 and the Orioles defeated the Crimson the first two seasons by a combined score of 72-7.

The next decade was owned by the Crimson as Maple Grove defeated Osseo in nine consecutive regular season games. The final record setting win came in 2006 when Crimson junior
Ethan Magstadt ran for 317 yards and scored seven touchdowns in the Crimson’s 49-28 victory.

That win was impactful, but it ended the run of Crimson domination.

Osseo head coach
Derrin Lamker had taken the helm in 2005 and immediately placed his thumb print on the Orioles program. In the nine losses, Osseo averaged 10-points per game. Lamker changed the dynamic of the program and the rivalry winning seven of the last eight games on the field, the Orioles averaged 25-points per contest against the Crimson.

In 2011, the Crimson welcomed a new coach in Matt Lombardi who had helped lead Wayzata High School to three state championships in seven seasons as the defensive coordinator.

In the three previous Osseo wins (2007, 2008, and 2010) the Orioles averaged 39 points. Under Lombardi’s defense, that number dropped 13 points to 24 per game against the Orioles.

The last three games have been decided by a combined 14 points.
