Maple Grove has stressed tempo during their winning streak
and the Crimson once again started fast in their 28-27 victory over Prior Lake
on Friday, October 14 at Crimson Stadium.
The Crimson offense marched down the field and, in 13 plays, senior quarterback Brad Davison stretched across the goal line for a touchdown. The defense held and gave the ball back to the offense. Playing with the wind at his back, Davison found senior Ky Carlson wide open for a second Crimson score.
Heading into the second quarter the Crimson led 14-0, but the Lakers would answer back.
The Lakers mounted their comeback, taking advantage of the strong south wind and Crimson
penalties. Prior Lake scored two touchdowns of their own in the second
quarter, but couldn’t capitalize on either point after touchdown leaving them
behind 14-12 at the half. The Crimson had an opportunity to put more points on
the board as they were set up with first and goal on the 10-yard line, but
confusion after a Prior Lake personal foul on third down at the Lakers five
yard line moved the ball to the two, but did not result in a first down.
Davison slipped and turned the ball over on downs.
Maple Grove extended the lead on their first drive of the second half. Another sustained drive led to another Davison touchdown run, this time from six yards out. It was Davison’s 10th rushing score of the season which gave the Crimson a 21-12 lead.
The Lakers answered on a 55-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, then took their first lead late in the fourth quarter. With the Crimson needing a touchdown to complete the comeback victory, Davison and the offense went to work and began to make their way downfield.
Carlson returned the squib kick to the Crimson 37-yard line. On first down, senior Ryan Hanscome bounced off the right side into Lakers territory for 15 yards. A holding call on the Crimson brought the ball back and made it first and eight.
Davison found Hanscome on a screen pass for six yards setting up second down and two at the 45-yard line. Hanscome took the second down hand off and gained four yards giving the Crimson a first down at the 47. On first down, Davison connected with Erik Christensen for a 13-yard connection netting yet another first down and the ball inside Lakers territory at the 40-yard line. Davison kept the ball on first down and headed out of bounds in front of the Crimson bench where he was tackled out of bounds which drew a personal foul penalty adding 15 yards to the play setting up first down at the Lakers 20-yard line with a minute to play. The first down pass from Davison went in and out of Christensen’s hands. After a Prior Lake timeout, Davison and Hanscome moved the ball down to the Lakers seven-yard line setting up first and goal. Davison ran for no gain on first down leading the Crimson to use their first timeout. Davison’s pass fell short of Ky Carlson setting up third and goal.
On the drive’s 10th play, Davison
found Jack Dugan wide open in the center of the end zone giving the Crimson the
lead with just 34 seconds to play.
The Crimson defense turned back the Lakers and intercepted quarterback Jacob Hitz ending the game and giving Maple Grove their third straight victory.
Maple Grove will complete their regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 19t at Shakopee.
