The field has been set for the 2016 Class 6A Football Tournament. Under the new format that began last year, the largest schools in the state were placed in a 32 team field and seeded by section, then were randomly placed into eight team brackets.

Maple Grove (6-2) #2 seed Section 5

The Crimson were seeded number two in Section 5 and will open the playoffs at home against Roseville on 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28. Maple Grove is assured two home games if they defeat Roseville and would take on the winner of the Edina and Eastview match up. The eight team field includes Eden Prairie and Edina, the two teams that defeated the Crimson in the regular season.

The rest of the field:

1- Eden Prairie

2- Maple Grove

3- Edina

4- Cretin-Derham Hall

5- Anoka

6- Eastview

7- Roseville

8- Eagan

The Road to State:

By not securing a number one seed, the Crimson's road to the state semifinals are a bit more challenging. Matt Lombardi's team will likely have to defeat Edina in the second round, in order to get to Eden Prairie. The Hornets defeated Maple Grove 21-20 early in the season. They would then face the winner of the Eden Prairie and Cretin-Derham Hall game for the right to play at US Bank in the semifinals.

Osseo (2-6) #6 seed in Section 5

The Orioles were seeded sixth in Section Five and if a repeat championship is in the cards they will need to be road warriors. Osseo will open up the playoffs against Mounds View on 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28 at Mounds View. The bracket is loaded with #1 seed Totino-Grace and #2 seed Lakeville North.

The rest of the field:

1- Totino-Grace

2- Lakeville North

3- Mounds View

4- Hopkins

5- Farmington

6- Osseo

7- Shakopee

8- Coon Rapids

The Road to State:

The Orioles come into this year completely different than a year ago with a new coaching staff and only eight returning starters from a year ago. If Osseo can play the upset card against Mounds View, it will likely mean a trip to Lakeville North to face the Panthers in a rematch of 2015 state quarterfinal game.

The Rest of the Field:

In addition to Blaine and Eden Prairie, Totino-Grace and Rosemount picked up the other top seeds. Lakeville North, East Ridge and Minnetonka join Maple Grove as the other #2 seeds in the tournament.

Last year, two top seeds (Maple Grove and East Ridge) and two #2 seeds (Osseo and Totino-Grace) advanced to the final four.
