Nearly 20 years ago, The Woods Gifts opened in Maple Grove.

“When we built the store, Super America and Tom Thumb were the only other businesses around. The original Target wasn’t even here,” Owner Dave Looney said. “There have been lots of changes - the Maple Grove population has almost doubled.”

After looking all over the northwest metro area, they were able to eventually able to secure their current spot located at 15825 95th Avenue North.

“It was all farmland,” Dave said of their neighbors. "We even had a cow in our front yard at one time when it got out.”

The Woods initially started out as Davlins-Fine Created Gifts of Wood in Minneapolis in 1985. By 1987, the concept was expanded to three Twin Cities stores. A new concept store, The Woods, was opened in Maple Grove ten years later to include not only hand crafted decor, but candles, home accessories, seasonal items, Minnesota-focused products, and more.

After nearly two decades, Dave attributes several reasons for The Woods continued strong presence in the Maple Grove community such as unique and fresh products for customers, “great atmosphere” and committed longtime employees.

“They love us. It’s their happy place,” Linda said of The Woods customers. “Everything is here and ready for them. They feel comfortable with us. We love our customers - we look forward to each day with them.”

Early on, Dave said it was important for them to be part of and contribute to the community by hosting and supporting a variety of events.

One such event includes The Woods annual Holiday Walk in the Woods event Saturday, Nov. 19 which includes a visit with Santa, live reindeer, children’s stories, an opportunity to donate a new toy to Toys for Tots and more.

After nearly 20 years, the Looney's continue to see a "bright future" for The Woods.

“"What we love is the ever changing world of the gift industry,” Dave said. “We see a lot on the horizon. We try to create an experience for people when they come here -- great product, great service, fun atmosphere.”
