The Week in Sports: Heritage Basketball Starts Strong

The calendar flips to December 2016 and the winter sports schedule is heating up. 

Girls Basketball 
Heritage Christian Academy: The Eagles won their opening game against Mound Westonka 48-46. Heritage was led in scoring by Maddy Torve with 14 points, Annika Simonson added 11.

Maple Grove: The Crimson lost their season opener at Wayzata 57-43 on Tuesday, Nov. 29. Juniors Rebekah Tyler and Katrina Theis led Maple Grove in scoring with 15 and 13 points respectively. They picked up their first win of the season on Friday, Dec. 2 at Rogers 55-46. Theis paced the Crimson attack with 18 points in the victory.

OsseoThe Orioles fell to fifth ranked St. Michael-Albertville 81-53. Azaria Reed scored 20 points to lead Osseo while Mina Porte and Mikayla Homola added 11 and 10.

Boys Basketball  
Heritage Christian Academy: The Heritage Christian Academy boys team opened their season with an impressive 80-47 victory over Park Christian of Moorhead. Zach Johansen and CJ Woda led the Eagles with 24 and 21 points each. Seth Halvorsen and Jack VanderTop added 12 and 10 points each.

Boys Hockey  
Maple Grove: The Crimson upped their record to 2-1 with an 8-2 victory over Champlin Park on Saturday, Dec. 3. Sam Huff notched a hat trick and added an assist, Trevor Kukkonen scored two goals in the Maple Grove win.

Osseo: The Orioles fell to 0-3 on the season following a 6-3 loss to Andover. Coby Timm scored twice for Osseo in the loss.

Girls Hockey 
Maple Grove: The Crimson girls upped their record to 5-1 with a pair of wins last week. Tuesday, Nov 29, Maple Grove defeated Centennial 5-4, then followed that with a 7-1 victory over Champlin Park. Taylor Wente scored a goal and added an assist against Centennial while Maia Martinez scored a goal and added two assists. Mannon McMahon led the Crimson against Champlin Park with a four goal, two assist night.

North Metro: The Stars lost a pair of games last week. They fell to Elk River/ Zimmerman 13-0 on Tuesday, Nov. 29, then dropped a game to Blaine 10-0 on Saturday, Dec. 3.
