Holiday Tournament Recap: Maple Grove, Osseo, Heritage Boys Hoops Stay Hot

The Maple Grove Crimson picked up a pair of wins in the Breakdown’s Granite City Classic. The Crimson defeated Lakeville South 85-65 in the opening game, then followed that up with a 103-87 victory over Apple Valley. Three players scored 20 or more for Maple Grove in the win against Lakeville South led by Jack Hutchison’s 24 points. Tywhon Pickford added 22 and Brad Davison poured in 20 in the win. Davison continued his strong senior season against Apple Valley finishing one assist shy of a triple-double (31 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists), and Pickford has returned to form prior to his season ending knee injury last season as he led the way with 32 points and seven rebounds.
Boys Varsity Basketball Game: Maple Grove Senior High v. Blaine High School - Jan 6, 2017 7 PM.
The Osseo Orioles won the championship of the Moorhead tournament as they blew out Stillwater and Moorhead. Five players reached double-digits in the Orioles 99-38 win over Stillwater. Zach Theisen led the way with 31. The formula was the same in the title game against the host Spuds. Theisen scored 35 points while John Bezdicek added 22.
The Orioles (7-1) travel to DeLaSalle on Wednesday and Spring Lake Park on Friday.
Heritage Christian Academy picked up a big 56-41 win against No. 4 ranked Spring Grove. CJ Woda led Eagles in scoring with 23 while Zach Johansen added 18. The Eagles lost to host Perham in the championship game 60-57 in overtime. Johansen and Woda scored 18 each while Jack VanderTop added 13.
The Eagles (5-1) play a pair of games this week as they host Spectrum on Thursday, Jan 5 and play at Providence Academy on Saturday, Jan. 7.
The Maple Grove girls team dropped a pair of games at the St. Michael-Albertville Holiday Tournament. The Crimson lost 65-60 to St. Michael in the opening game. Juniors Autumn Mlinar, Katrina Theis and Lauryn Moline led the way offensively with 18, 16 and 10 points. The Crimson faced Edina in the second game of the tournament, losing 64-52. Mlinar scored 18 points in the loss and senior Abbey Rostamo added 15.
The Crimson (3-7) travel to Blaine to face the Bengals on Friday, Jan. 6.
Osseo lost their two games in the Rochester tournament over the holiday break. The Orioles lost 55-44 to Rochester Mayo on Thursday, Dec. 29, then fell to Chanhassen 69-59 on Friday, Dec. 30.
Girls Basketball Game: Osseo Senior High v. Spring Lake Park High School - start: Jan 6, 2017 7PM
Heritage Christian Academy played in the Perham Tournament, defeating Perham on Tuesday, Dec. 27, then losing to Roseau 84-56. Annika Simonson, Taylie Scott and Maddy Torve scored 19, 18 and 14 to lead the Eagles against Perham. The trio scored 19, 11 and 12 in the loss to Roseau.
The Eagles play once this week as they travel to Spectrum on Friday, Jan. 6.
Maple Grove finished 2-1 in the St. Louis Park tournament over the holiday break. After losing the opening game 7-5 against Lakeville North, the Crimson picked up a pair of impressive wins over Holy Family and Prior Lake. The Crimson lost to Holy Family in the second game of the season, but picked up a 1-0 victory thanks in large part to a 29 save shutout by freshman Ethan Haider.
The Crimson (8-3) travel to Centennial on Thursday, Jan 5.
Osseo dropped three games in Warroad. The Orioles fell to International Falls 6-4, Warroad 5-0 and Grafton/Park River 2-1. Coby Timm scored a pair of goals for the Orioles during the three games.
The Orioles (0-11), travel to Spring Lake Park on Thursday, Jan. 5, then host Irondale on Boys Hockey: Osseo Senior High v. Irondale High School - Jan 7, 2017 3PM.
The Crimson finished 2-1 at the Edina Holiday Tournament. After defeating Lakeville South 5-1 in the first round, the Crimson fell to Edina 2-1, then defeated Eastview 2-0 in the third game. Maple Grove (12-2), lost to the top ranked Hornets for the second time this season. Sophomore Mannon McMahon scored four goals in the victory over Lakeville South. Senior Taylor Wente notched a goal against Edina and Eastview.
Girls Varsity Hockey Game: Maple Grove v. Farmington - Jan 4, 2017 7PM
North Metro picked up a pair of victories in the Schwan Cup. After losing to Northern Lakes 3-0, the Stars picked up back-to-back 3-2 wins over Marshall and Eveleth-Gilbert. Alyia Bjork scored the game winner in overtime against Marshall. Anna Ballweber notched two goals in the Stars win over Eveleth-Gilbert.
North Metro (2-11) host Minneapolis on Tuesday, Jan. 3 and travel to St. Francis on Saturday, Jan. 7.
