Sports Review: New Year, Big Games

The Maple Grove Crimson girls hockey team defeated Farmington 4-1 on Wednesday, Jan. 4 to improve their season record to 13-2. Tina Kampa scored twice in the victory for the Crimson while Breanna Blesi made 26 saves in net. Maple Grove is off until Saturday, Jan. 14 when they travel to Hill-Murray to face off with the Pioneers.
North Metro split their two games this past week. The Stars defeated Minneapolis 3-2 on Tuesday, Jan. 3. Elli Horvath, Erin Donaldson and Anna Ballweber all tallied goals in the win. On Saturday, Jan. 6, the Stars fell 2-1 to St. Francis. North Metro hosts Armstrong/Cooper on Monday, Jan. 8 and St. Paul on Tuesday, Jan. 9 before heading on the road on Saturday, Jan. 14.
The Crimson boys hockey team picked up a big 5-3 section win over Centennial on Thursday, Jan. 12. Justin Kelley notched a hat trick, scoring a goal in all three periods for Maple Grove who improved to 9-3 on the season. The Crimson host Andover and then face Anoka on the road on Saturday, Jan. 14.
The Osseo boys hockey team dropped a pair of games this past week, losing to Spring Lake Park 5-1 on Thursday, Jan. 5 and Irondale 1-0 on Saturday, Jan. 7. The Orioles (0-13) play a pair of games on the road this week as they travel to Coon Rapids on Thursday, Jan. 12 and Armstrong/Cooper on Saturday, Jan. 14.
Maple Grove defeated Blaine 52-43 in the team’s only game this week. Junior Katrina Theis led all scorers with 18 points. Senior Abbey Rostamo added 11 in the win. The Crimson (4-7) play three games this week. Tuesday, Jan. 10, they host Totino-Grace High School;Thursday, Jan. 12 the Crimson travel to Spring Lake Park and Saturday, Jan. 14, the Spuds from Moorhead come to Maple Grove.
The Osseo Orioles lost their only game last week as they fell 55-49 to Spring Lake Park. Mikayla Homola led all scorers with 19 points. Azaria Reed added 11 points for Osseo who fell to 2-9 on the season. The Orioles travel to Armstrong on Tuesday, Jan. 10 and Champlin Park on Thursday, Jan. 12.
Heritage Christian Academy split their two games this past week. The Eagles lost to Watertown-Mayer 80-55 and defeated Spectrum 62-51. Annika Simonson, Taylie Scott and Maddie Torve led the way offensively for the Eagles against Watertown-Mayer scoring 20, 18 and 10 points each. The Eagles play three games this week. They travel to St. Croix Lutheran on Tuesday, Jan. 10, they host Minneapolis North on Wednesday, Jan. 11 and a big conference tilt against Maranatha on Friday, Jan. 13.
Maple Grove picked up a 79-48 win over Blaine on Friday, Jan. 6. Click here for photos and recap. Brad Davison led the Crimson with 21 points while Tywhon Pickford added 19 and Jack Hutchison added 15 in the victory which propelled Maple Grove’s record to 7-1. The Crimson play three games this week, traveling to Totino-Grace on Tuesday, Jan. 10, then host Spring Lake Park on Thursday, Jan. 12 before a big matchup at Hopkins on Saturday, Jan. 14.
Osseo split their two games this past week. The Orioles fell 76-74 to DeLaSalle and then defeated Spring Lake Park 101-43. Five players scored double figures against the Islanders led by John Bezdicek with 17. Zach Theisen scored 34 to lead the way for Osseo against Spring Lake Park. Osseo has a pair of home games this week as they host Robbinsdale Armstrong and top ranked Champlin Park on Tuesday and Thursday.
Heritage Christian Academy won both of their games this past week. The Eagles defeated Spectrum 75-35 on Thursday, Jan. 5 and then went on to defeat Providence Academy 71-58 on Saturday, Jan. 7. CJ Woda and Zach Johansen scored 18 and 17 points against Spectrum and 15 and 21 against Providence. Three games await the Eagles this week. They host St. Croix Prep on Tuesday, Jan. 10, then travel to Maranatha on Friday and Central Minnesota Christian on Saturday.
