Champlin Park Defeats Crimson in Basketball Battle

Feb 06, 2017 09:57PM ● By Doug Erlien

In front of a packed gym at Maple Grove Senior High School, the top two teams in Minnesota Class 4A boys basketball gave the fans everything they wanted.

It was the visiting Champlin Park Rebels who continued their undefeated run through the regular season, defeating the Crimson 70-60.

With the Rebels leading by double-digits in the first half, the Crimson cut the lead to five before halftime when senior Brad Davison drew a foul on a pump fake that got McKinley Wright in the air. Davison, who led all scorers with 25, made both free throws to pull to within 31-26.

The top ranked Rebels were able to stretch the lead to open the second half and were able to hold the lead at nine, despite center Theo John picking up his fourth foul with a little more than 11 minutes left in the game. Wright took over offensively, scoring 24 points in the win. Tywhon Pickford, who was honored before the game for scoring his 1,000th career point, pulled the game to six after Davison had fouled out with a little over two minutes remaining. The Rebels made their free throws down the stretch and came away with the victory.

With the loss, the Crimson fell to 15-2 and will travel to Irondale on Thursday, Feb. 8 to battle the Knights.
