Maple Grove Girls Hockey Primed for Section Championship

Feb 17, 2017 08:21AM ● By Doug Erlien
A year ago, the Maple Grove girls hockey team celebrated the section 5AA championship and advanced to the state tournament on the heels of a 4-1 win over Centennial. One year later, the Crimson are back to defend their title and standing on the doorstep as they prepare to face the Blaine Bengals on Friday, Feb. 17 at the Roseville Ice Arena.

The two teams met one time in the regular season with the two teams skating to a 1-1 tie early in February. Taylor Wente tied for the team lead in points and has put together a great senior season. The Ms. Hockey candidate has tallied two goals and three assists in the Crimson’s two section playoff victories. The key to defeating Blaine, however, will come in goal where Maple Grove has a pair of playoff tested goalies in Coco Francis and Breanna Blesi.

The Bengals (21-3-2) boast a Ms. Hockey finalist as well in defenseman Emily Brown and are 12-2-1 in their last 15 games.

The Crimson (22-4-1) are 9-1-1 in their last 11 contests.
