Maple Grove Girls Hockey Falls Short in Section Title Game

Feb 17, 2017 10:54PM ● By Doug Erlien

The Maple Grove Crimson girls hockey team entered the Section 5AA championship game against Blaine knowing they were in for a physical contest. The Bengals and Crimson skated to a 1-1 tie in the regular season. It was the Bengals who utilized a suffocating defense to defeat the defending section champions 3-0 to advance to the state tournament.

Blaine stuck early, scoring goals on their first two shots of the game on senior goaltender Breanna Blesi in the first five minutes of the first period. The Crimson’s best scoring opportunity came shortly after Blaine tallied twice. Senior Taylor Wente found the puck on her stick on a breakaway but Blaine Goaltender Jaela O’Brien closed the door holding the Ms. Hockey finalist and the Crimson off the board.

The Bengals added a goal late in the second period and continued their defensive dominance in the final period.
