The Crimson picked up a pair of first period goals just 22 seconds apart. Senior Jake Cammarata scored his 14th goal of the season at 9:17 of the first period giving Maple Grove the only tally they would need. Sophomore Trevor Kukkonen scored the second goal at 9:39 and added an empty net goal to seal the victory.
Freshman goalie Ethan Haider stopped all 24 shots he faced giving the Crimson an opportunity to advance to the state tournament for just the second time in school history.
Standing in the way are the Centennial Cougars who advanced to the championship game with a 6-1 victory over Anoka. The teams met twice during the regular season and split their meetings. The Crimson defeated the Cougars 5-3 in early January, and the Cougars shutout Maple Grove 5-0 later in the month. Centennial is 14-1-1 since the loss to Maple Grove and has outscored their opponents in the tournament 13 to 1.
The third contest between the two teams will take place Thursday, March 2 at 7 p.m. at Aldrich Arena in Maplewood.
