The victory earned the Crimson the Section 5AA Championship.
The Crimson fell behind early when Centennial’s Carter Wagner scored at 5:44 of the opening period. Maple Grove's Tyler Kostelecky scored a little more than two minutes later. Senior Sam Huff scored the first of his two goals at 11:01 of the period giving Maple Grove a 2-1 lead. Centennial tied the game at 13:18 when Hayedn Brickner scored an even strength goal. Maple Grove would answer a minute later when Huff netted his second goal giving the Crimson a 3-2 lead after a period.
The teams seemed to settle in during the second period, but the Crimson extended their lead to two goals late in the period when Kostelecky tallied to give Maple Grove a 4-2 lead after two periods.
Graham Brickner pulled the Cougars to within a single goal at 7:12 of the third period but that was as close as Centennial could get. Maple Grove freshman goaltender Ethan Haider saved 36 of 39 shots in goal and the Crimson advanced to the state tournament for the first time since 2012.
The state tournament begins Thursday, March 9 at Xcel Energy Center. At 8 p.m. Thursday, Maple Grove (22-6-0) will play Grand Rapids High School (20-7-1).
