In both halves, the undefeated Rebels pushed their lead to double digits and in both halves, the Orioles answered and never quit.
“There are so many people out there that told us as coaches that you could have given up easily, but you didn’t,” Head Coach Tim Theisen told his team following the loss. “That’s been the mark of this Osseo program for years.”
The Orioles defense did a great job frustrating Champlin Park center Theo John, who scored only four points on the night. The other half of the Rebel dynamic duo picked up the slack, however, as McKinley Wright scored 31 points in the win.
Osseo trailed 40-34 at the half and came out slow to begin the second half as Champlin Park extended their lead to double digits. Junior guard Zach Theisen, who scored 22 points in the loss, kept the Orioles in it as they chipped away and pulled to within four points with just under two minutes remaining in the game.
That would be as close as Osseo would get.
The undefeated Rebels sealed the game at the free throw line and advanced to the state tournament for the first time since 2015 when they finished second. Osseo finished the season 21-8. It marks the 10th time in the past 11 seasons that the Orioles have finished with more than 20 victories in a season.
