Bloodied and bruised, the Maple Grove Crimson boys basketball
team couldn’t overcome a white hot shooting night by Apple Valley and a cold
offensive performance as they lost to the Eagles 77—54 in the Minnesota StateHigh School League semifinal game.
“We talked about it with our guys. Every tournament there is going to be a game where you have to find a way to win when you’re not shooting well,” Crimson Head Coach Nick Schroeder said. “Unfortunately, that didn’t happen for us.”
Trailing by four at the half 34-30, the Crimson opened the second half on a 9-3 run to take a 39-37 lead with 15:24 remaining.
“We played with a little different energy,” Schroeder said about his teams start to the second half. “Apple Valley went on a nice little run, hit a couple of threes and got a couple of layups and got us right back down.”
It was the Eagles that turned up the defensive pressure that sparked their 23-2 run over the next seven minutes to take control of the game.
Brad Davison and Tywhon Pickford combined to shoot just 13-38 from the field and the Eagles defense played a toll on the seniors as the game progressed.
“Our goal was to try to stop him (Davison) as much as possible and Pickford,” Apple Valley guard Mohamed Kone said. “We knew if we stopped those two, they would break down."
Senior Bubba Horton missed time in the first half as he left with a cut to the chin, Davison and Pickford battled knee and hamstring issues down the stretch in the second half.
“They look like a bunch of mummies right now wrapped in ice,” Schroeder said.
Apple Valley Senior Tre Jones finished the game with a triple-double with 19 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.
The Crimson will face Wayzata in the third place game 4 p.m. Saturday, March 25 at Concordia University in St. Paul.
