Four Osseo Middle School students, which are members of Girl Scout Troop #13589 in Osseo, organized a month-long food drive in the winter - collecting 321 pounds of food for local CROSS Services Food Shelf.
The Girl Scouts, Christina Corniea, Alexis Petterson, Mollee Beck and Jasmine Dolan, earned a Silver Award for their efforts which will be presented in June.
"I'm really proud and happy for the girls that they could come up with a project and be successful with it," Girl Scout Troop Leader Jenny Beck said. "One of the things that we work on in Girl Scouts is community service and being positive with that. They learn that people are willing to help and are generous when asked. They learned to work with people, speak up and ask for their support."
After spending more than 50 hours planning and implementing their project, the Girl Scouts collected food at Osseo Middle School, area nursing homes, Great Northern Corporation, and more. To assist, Osseo Middle School Health Teacher Dawn Olson included the food drive into her curriculum and the school helped promote the food drive in a newsletter.
"This amount of food will go far
to help feed many families who are going through a difficult time," CROSS Executive Director Elizabeth Johnson said. "It is gratifying to know
that young people are aware of hunger issues here in our community and are
doing something selfless like this to help. Thank you."
CROSS Services serves the communities Maple Grove, Osseo, Corcoran, Champlin, Dayton, Osseo and Rogers and provides services such as a food shelf and housing assistance.
