Even though teens in Maple Grove eventually grow older – one constant throughout the years has been the programming and activities offered through the Maple Grove Teen Center.
Teens of all ages are welcome to participate in program and activities offered at the Maple Grove Teen Center and through Maple Grove Parks and Recreation. However, Maple Grove Youth Outreach Coordinator Tanya Hilger finds it’s the middle school group that tends to embrace the teen center and other youth activities.
“For a lot of them (sixth and seventh graders), it’s a new experience of being on their own for the first time. We try to help them to learn how to be responsible for themselves and appropriate social skills in public,” Hilger said. In addition to having fun, they build on learning about “respect for people and property.”
The teens help drive and guide the programs offered through the Maple Grove Teen Center, based on their interests and what is trending. A teen advisory group works collaboratively with staff to find new, or provide feedback, about programs and activities.
“They do a nice job,” she said. “That core group will keep us moving forward and on top of the next new thing.”
During their involvement, the group is taught leadership skills, value of working together, and gaining ownership, according to Hilger.
“We teach them how to be part of a community,” she said of the advisory group. “It allows them to find out some skills they may not have known about – all while having fun.”
