Maple Grove city leaders and Portillo’s came together Tuesday, Aug. 1 at the site of the new restaurant to break ground. The second Minnesota location of the Chicago based restaurant chain is aiming to open in late 2017.

“Throughout the approval process, we learned about the love of our residents for Portillo’s,” Maple Grove Mayor Mark Steffenson
said. “We’re happy to have Portillo’s here in Minnesota and particularly happy to have Portillo’s in Maple Grove.”

After initial concerns over parking and traffic flow were addressed, the site of the restaurant in
The Shoppes at Arbor Lakes was approved by the Maple Grove City Council in May.

“The city did a survey along with Hennepin County and they assured us that the traffic would be fine,” Council Member Karen Jaeger said. “We know it’s going to be a lot of traffic in the beginning - as it was with Krispy Kreme.
After a couple of council meetings, the four of us came to a decision. We were convinced that it will work.”

The approximately 9,000 square foot restaurant will includes seasonal outdoor seating and a dual lane drive-thru.

Portillo’s CEO Keith Kinsey talked to the assembled crowd about coming to Maple Grove and additionally how impressed he was at how the Council asked the right questions.

“From a standpoint of the citizens of this community, you should be very proud of the way they asked those questions. It’s all part of the community piece, too,” Kinsey said. “You have to be really happy with that.”
