State Championship Once Again on the Minds at Osseo

Aug 30, 2017 01:26PM ● By Doug Erlien

A year ago, Ryan Stockhaus was a first year head coach trying to put his stamp on a program that was coming off of a state championship. Although Osseo's record wasn’t what the team wanted to achieve, Stockhaus made the program his.

The program and the school is buzzing as the season starts and the message is simple.

The time is now.

“Really going from not having an off season, just having the summer last year, it was a short time frame to get to know the guys but we just put our head down and got after it,” Osseo Senior High Football Head Coach Ryan Stockhaus said. “The difference this year though, the expectations are clear. There has been a very successful off season.”

It took some time, but Stockhaus’ feels his culture has taken hold and his players have embraced it. Heading into 2017, it’s state championship or bust. The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) went through a redistricting this past May and due to enrollment, Osseo dropped down to 5A for the playoffs, but will face the same grueling 6A schedule.

“I think that we play in a really tough district,” Stockhaus said. “Last year three of the final four were from our district and five of the final eight were from our district and the one 5A team we played was a state tournament team as well. We played against the best of the best.”

Numbers are strong with 75 juniors and seniors in the fold, many returning on both sides of
the ball. Quarterback Greg Arrell is back under center for his second season. The senior had a strong offseason in the weight room and his 2016 experience should help lead the way early in the season.

On the defensive side of the ball, senior linebacker Adam Lanners will lead a strong defensive unit.

“I think we’re a leg up from where we were in the past,” Stockhaus said. “We have high expectations. A big piece this year was looking at the community and culture of the football team and the building. For us to change the mindset, to change the culture. If we have specific goals we want to achieve, how are we going to get them done. A big piece of that has been that culture change. For us, if we are going to commit to being champions and say we want to prepare with a championship mindset, then our course is solidified.”
