It took a while, a little more than 24 minutes to be exact, for the Maple Grove Senior High girls soccer team to put a ball in the back of the net - but, the Crimson spent the final 16 minutes of the first half depositing balls into Park Center’s goal in their 6-0 section quarterfinal win.

“We were playing as well as we’ve seen them and it was one of those things where it was only a matter of time,” Head Coach Ben LeVahn said. “That was a championship start to the postseason.”

After scoring their first goal, the Crimson netted their second just 27 seconds later. The top seed in the section 5AA tournament never looked back and dominated the Pirates.

“We really worked hard on inside out plays,” LeVahn said. “Our defense, everybody recovered. It’s one of those things we might not win the first ball, but we’ve got to get the second.”

Shelby Handberg led Maple Grove with a pair of goals. Mia Omar, Meredith Haakenson, Mannon McMahon and Isabelle Ampe all scored for the Crimson.

Sarah Cortez picked up her 12th shutout of the season in the victory.

The Crimson host Coon Rapids 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct.12.
