Maple Grove Boys Own Second Half, Advance to State

Oct 18, 2017 06:47AM ● Published by Doug Erlien

The Maple Grove Crimson boys soccer team has advanced to the state tournament five times in program history. They made it a half dozen on Tuesday, Oct.17 with a 3-1 victory over St. Cloud Tech in the MSHSL Section 8AA championship game.

It was St. Cloud Tech who would score first, taking the momentum in the games 21st minute on a goal from Ismail Ismail.

The lead, and momentum, was short lived as two minutes later, MGSH junior Riley Gill evened the score at one.

“We didn’t play our game in the first half,” Crimson Co-Head Coach Justin Turner said. “We made adjustments, won more balls, and wore them out in the second half.”

The Crimson adjusted and forced the play. Junior Alex Downing provided the offense. Downing and the Crimson took a 2-1 lead on a free kick six minutes into the second half.

Downing would give Maple Grove an insurance goal three minutes later sending the Crimson to the state tournament for the first time in three years.

“Pretty amazing actually,” Junior Goalkeeper Matthew Hennessey said. “I’ve never seen this team make it this far. With all the section games, we’re just taking it one game at a time and playing our hardest each game.”

The Crimson will begin play in the MSHSL state tournament next week with quarterfinal action. The day and time will be determined following the seeding process.
