A request to move forward with an agreement with a contractor (Sue McLean & Associates) to plan a “Big Game Bash” Concert in February 2018 was denied by the Maple Grove City Council at the Monday, Oct. 16 meeting

planning committee consisting of representatives from the city of Maple Grove, Maple Grove Parks and Recreation, North Hennepin Chamber of Commerce, Maple Grove Community Organization, Arbor Lakes Business Association, Minneapolis Northwest Tourism, and The Shoppes at Arbor Lakes have been meeting since spring and proposed a live Central Park concert in February.

Several questions, and concerns, arose by council members when the concept was presented at the Oct. 2
Maple Grove City Council meeting and voting on an agreement with a contractor to plan a concert was tabled.

Maple Grove Economic Development Manager Carie Wille once again brought the request to the city council at the Oct. 16. At the meeting, she addressed several items including an updated budget and the addition of a cancellation clause.

"We understand there is some hesitancy due to a lot of the unknowns with an event like this in the wintertime and our weather, so a possible alternative that would utilize the energy that has been brought forward to this...would be to put on a summer time outdoor concert at Central Park," Wille said at the Oct. 16 meeting.

"I can't support this," Councilmember Karen Jaeger said of the proposed winter concert at the meeting. "I just feel it is too costly for our citizens to have to pay for. I know you have answered all of our questions...but, I think with all of the unknowns...I think the idea for a summer thing might be a good thing."

Councilmember Judy Hanson and Councilmember Phil Leith echoed the same concerns as Jaeger.

"I have heard from many citizens as well and they definitely weren't in favor of a winter concert," Councilmember Barnett said.

A unanimous 5-0 vote by the Maple Grove City Council, with a motion by Councilmember Jaeger, seconded by Councilmember Leith, to deny the Agreement with Sue McLean & Associates for the production of Maple Grove’s Big Game Bash concert event passed at the Oct. 16 meeting.
