It's Strength vs. Strength for Maple Grove and St. Michael-Albertville

Nov 08, 2017 04:06AM ● By Doug Erlien
There might not be a more telling story line in the state quarterfinal football game between Maple Grove and St. Michael-Albertville than Crimson junior running back Evan Hull against the Knights run defense.

Hull has topped at least 129 yards rushing in every game he has played this season and in two playoff games has rushed for a staggering 645 yards on 70 carries and has eight touchdowns in the process. In the playoff game against Roseville, Hull set Crimson records for rushing yards in a single game and obliterated the single season mark set in 2015 by Isaac Collins.

“Evan really wants to get better and push himself every day,” Crimson Head Coach Matt Lombardi said. “He has grown so much this year. He is learning to trust his ability and make the defense react to him.”

The STMA defense has been equally impressive. The Knights have yet to allow a running back to reach the 100-yard mark on the ground which means something has to give.

“St. Michael plays very physical and fast and do a great job in their attack angles,” Lombardi said. “They will be a big challenge for us, but hopefully the level of the opponents we have seen all year should give us some confidence going in.”

The Crimson and Knights face off 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9 at Park Center High School.
