The Maple Grove Crimson rallied from a 27-10 deficit to score three touchdowns in the final 59 seconds of the state quarterfinal game against St. Michael-Albertville -earning a 29-27 win over STMA.

Let that sink in.

The Crimson’s season was, for all intent and purposes, finished. That is, until senior Joe Raymon put the team on his back and decided he wanted to play another game.

Raymon scored on a pass from fellow senior quarterback Curtis Haugen from 30-yards to make it a 27-16 game with 59 seconds left in the game.

Needing the onside kick, the Crimson executed it flawlessly giving them the ball at mid-field. Haugen found Raymon again this time on a pass to the sideline. With plenty of space, he worked his way down the sideline for a 49-yard score to make it a 27-22 game with 46 seconds left.

“The biggest play was when we got the second touchdown in one play,” Head Coach Matt Lombardi said. “It kind of gave people hope like hey we can still do this.”

Needing yet another onside kick, Lombardi dialed up the exact same play and it produced the same result. The Crimson took over and Raymon made the catch of the night. With first down at the 28-yard line, Haugen threw toward the end zone and Raymon leaped over two Knights to make a spectacular catch at the one-yard line and with seven seconds left, Haugen spiked the ball to stop the clock.

Credit the Knights defense who all night held running back Evan Hull to his lowest rushing total of the season. Hull, once again cracked the 100-yard plateau, the 11th time this season the junior running back has done so, putting him over 2,000 yards on the season. He sent the Crimson to U.S. Bank Stadium as he walked in untouched for the game winning touchdown.

“I’ve been a part of many games,” Lombardi said. “This is unlike any I’ve ever seen.”

The Postgame:

Coaches wandered, wondering out loud what had just happened. Players embraced, students from Maple Grove and elsewhere stormed the field all wondering the same thing.

Did that just happen?

For the third time in four seasons, Lombardi’s Crimson will play in the state semifinals. For the first time, the team will play inside at U.S. Bank Stadium.

“This is for everyone,” Lombardi said to his team and fans who gathered around after the victory. “It doesn’t matter how bad things look in your life, you keep fighting.”

Then he added.

“This will be a game that people will be talking about for years.”

The Crimson will face top ranked Eden Prairie on 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17 at U.S. Bank Stadium.
