The Maple Grove Senior High Crimson girls basketball team opened the 2017-2018 season with an impressive 63-45 win against No. 4 ranked Minnetonka.

Freshman Jordyn Lamker, making her first career varsity start, led the Crimson in scoring with 19 points including a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.

“We knew that she was a special player,” Head Coach Mark Cook said. “I was really impressed by her composure.”

The story for the Crimson was their defense. Maple Grove held the Skippers to just 45 points, and just two points in the final eight minutes of the game.

The victory was Cook’s 200th win of his career.

“I tell everyone it’s an award of longevity,” Cook said. “I’ve been super blessed with a coaching staff that just works their tail off. Yeah, the little number goes next to my name but it can’t happen without those unbelievable coaches around me. It can’t happen without unbelievable kids coming up through this program.”

Senior Katrina Theis added 16 points in the Crimson win.

Maple Grove hosts Wayzata on 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30.
