Maple Grove couldn’t overcome a hot shooting night from Lakeville North as the Panthers defeated the Crimson 89-71 in the quarterfinal round of the 2018 MSHSL Class AAAA boys basketball tournament March 21.

The Crimson trailed by as many as 13, 46-33 early in the second half before going on a 18-7 run to pull within two points at 53-51 with 10:50 left in the game.

“We were feeling pretty good. We were ready to go,” Crimson Head Coach Nick Schroeder said. “What we talked about at halftime was knowing who we were guarding, knowing what their game was, and what they were good at. We did not guard the three-point line well.”

The Panthers converted, making 10-for-19 from beyond the arc. It wasn’t just the three-point shot that fell for Lakeville North. The Panthers shot 59 percent from the field for the game and in the process answered the Crimson run with one of their own, extending their lead to 22 with 2:55 left in the game.

Nate Adams led the Crimson in scoring with 16, Kyle Dreyer added 13 and Jared Rainey scored 12 for Maple Grove.

In the consolation round March 22, the Crimson lost to Forest Lake 68-60 finishing Maple Grove’s season.
