Fairview Home Care and Hospice is offering college students an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience through its Summer Medical Explorer program.
The eight-week program, from mid-June to mid-August, is available to those interested in pursuing a career in health care, including medical, nursing, social work and psychology students.
Program participants will provide caregiver support, patient companionship and other tasks as assigned. They must volunteer at least eight hours each week and attend weekly educational training. Led by medical professionals, weekly training will educate participants on end-of-life care and life-limiting illnesses or diseases, as well as communication and active listening skills.
“Students will have the opportunity to make meaningful connections with those we serve and experience first-hand the importance of end-of-life care,” Fairview Volunteer Speciast Janell Tibodeau said.
Before a student can begin the program, they must complete a background check, health screening, TB test and volunteer orientation.
Space is limited to 20 students. Participants must submit their applications by May 24, 2018.
