The Maple Grove Crimson baseball team scored a pair of runs
in the bottom of the sixth inning and picked up a strong pitching performance
from Frank Volkers in their 3-1 victory over Moorhead in the quarterfinals of
the Section Eight tournament Thursday, May 31.
“We’re fortunate to have Frankie Volkers pitching good ball right now,” Head Coach Darby Carlson said. “He’s kept us in a lot of ball games.”
Volkers threw 103 pitches in the win and outside of an unearned Moorhead run in the top of the sixth inning his three scattered hits and nine strikeout performance gave his team the win and moved the Crimson to the semifinals where they will face Elk River Friday, June 1.
Maple Grove scored first when Jerome Gooley led off the fifth inning with a double. Daniel Marxen drove in Gooley two batters later. Moorhead answered in the top of the sixth inning on a Crimson error that briefly regained momentum for the Spuds.
The Crimson took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. Curtis Haugen led off the inning
with a single, then took second on a past ball. Gooley
dropped a perfect bunt down the third base line moving Haugen to third then
Hayden Thomsen dropped a suicide squeeze leaving Haugen to slide home past
Moorhead catcher Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe. JT House would add an insurance run to
put Maple Grove up 3-1.
Volker took care of the Spuds in the top of the seventh inning to secure the victory.
