For years, Maple Grove residents Tom Olney and Betty VanGorder have had a soft spot for animals.
As foster parents for all types of pets from the Animal Humane Society, they accumulated a variety of pet supplies – in great condition.
An idea to embrace reusing pet equipment combined with desire to start a business together, Pet Garage was born.
The new business, located at 13692 Grove Drive, opened at the end of July in Maple Grove. Customers can buy, sell, and donate items.
The duo focuses on their mission of building a “community for gently-used pet equipment that is affordable and accessible to local residents.”
“We have a good mix of new and used – it’s very unique,” Olney said. Items span a variety of household pets, including dogs, cats, fish, reptiles, birds and small mammals.
“We find the sustainability of our planet can reach much further if we all consider recycling and we’d love to be part of that element for our pets. Often pets become family and offering an affordable boutique for our community will enrich Maple Grove, MN and other surrounding areas,” Olney and VanGorder shared in their mission statement. “We are excited to provide an outlet for quality pet equipment at a gently used price while valuing the earth by Reducing. Reusing. Recycling.”
Pet Garage donates one percent of their sales to local rescues and shelters. Each month, they choose a new nonprofit.
While their first focus is on their Maple Grove location, they hope to eventually expand via a franchise model.
“We are really passionate about the store and feel like we have a special niche for pets and owners,” VanGorder said.
