The city of Maple Grove and Maple Grove Park Board hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony Aug. 20 for the opening of Fernbrook Fields Athletic Complex, located at the intersection of Fernbrook Lane and 99th Avenue NW (near Maple Grove Senior High).  

The Fernbrook Fields project was built in partnership with Osseo Area Schools, Hennepin County Youth Sports Program, Maple Grove Youth Lacrosse Association, Maple Grove Football Association and Maple Grove Soccer Association, according to the city of Maple Grove. 

At the ceremony, Maple Grove Mayor Mark Steffenson thanked all the partners for their work, commenting how it is a "great project" and he was "excited to have the cooperative agreement between all of the organizations."

There was an "enormous amount of work in this project," Steffenson commented. "I look forward to it being open."

"The Fernbrook Complex will also be able to host community gatherings and will be available as a rental facility for resident and corporate events," according to the city of Maple Grove. 

Features of the sport complex include four full size synthetic turf fields, picnic pavilion, community gathering plaza, concession building, and a playground.

Osseo Area Schools Board Chair Mike Ostaffe recognized all the partnerships as well, commenting the project "is a tremendous community asset" for the youth in the community.

The 19-acre site includes also includes a 245 stall parking lot, which may be used for "high school student parking during off-peak complex hours," according the city of Maple Grove

"You are leaving an amazing gift to your kids," Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson, commenting about the impact of all the volunteer dedication as well to the project.  "You should be really proud of this," he said. 

Additional speakers at the ceremony included MapleBrook Soccer Club Director of Coaching and Player Development Jean-Yves Viardin, Maple Grove Youth Lacrosse Association President Tim Kuebelbeck, Maple Grove Youth Football Association President Scott Fritz, Maple Grove Parks and Recreation Director Chuck Stifter.
