As part of the consent agenda at the Sept. 3 Maple Grove City Council meeting, a resolution was adopted to designate a loading zone along the south side of 89th Avenue, along Rice Lake Elementary, between Rice Lake Road and Elm Creek Boulevard.
The request was brought before the council by Osseo Area Schools representatives to , create a "loading zone on the south side of 89th Avenue (adjacent to Rice Lake Elementary School property), between Rice Lake Road and Elm Creek Boulevard," according to a memo presented to the council.
"As part of the school district’s recent review of traffic flow at Rice Lake Elementary School, district staff identified safety concerns with parents parking in the neighborhood to the north of the school to drop-off and/or wait to pick-up their children, since 89th Avenue is currently signed as No Parking on both sides of the road," the memo continued. "This resulted in students crossing 89th Avenue during peak school traffic times."
To prevent students from crossing 89th Avenue, Osseo Area Schools requested the 'No Parking' designation be changed.
"Parking within the designated loading zone will continue to be prohibited; however, parents will be allowed to stop along the south side of 89th Avenue, adjacent to school property, in order to drop-off or pick-up their students," according to the memo presented to the city council.
The council approved the request, citing safety improvements and to "minimize school-related loading maneuvers" in neighborhoods near Rice Lake Elementary School.
