A sweet new storefront business, Sugar & Spice Sweetery, has opened in Maple Grove featuring custom cakes, tortes, cheesecakes, cupcakes, cakelets, cookies, and more.

Owner Dawn Olson-Wallerus has partnered with Troy Reding, owner of Ally Restaurants (Rock Elm Tavern, Holman’s Table) to open a storefront after her home business, Sugar and Spice Custom Cakery, was ready to expand.

Sugar & Spice Sweetery opened February 3rd next door to Rock Elm Tavern, 15621 Grove Circle North. Spanning 1,400 square feet, the two businesses share a kitchen.

"The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive! Our first day was filled with family, friends, past and future clients," Rock Elm Tavern Marketing & Communications Director
Nikki Wallace said.

Reding had additional space after the build out of Rock Elm Tavern in Maple Grove, according to the business, and was ready for another concept. The partnership was formed after both business owners met at a chamber meeting.

“One day I went from Googling ‘how to open a home bakery’ to opening a brick and mortar, “ Olson-Wallerus said.

The new Sugar & Spice Sweetery business expands on the sweet concept Olson-Wallerus built with Sugar and Spice Custom Cakery. In addition to custom cakes, tortes, cheesecakes, cupcakes, cakelets, cookies, and more are available. It is a 'grab and go' concept, but will have outdoor seating in the summer.

To add to the menu options, edible cookie dough from Cookies & Cream and hand-crafted ice cream from Honey & Mackie’s.

“As soon as a sweets shop was decided, I knew I had to have Honey & Mackie’s be involved. We’ve carried their product since we opened Plymouth, and I’m all about supporting other local businesses,” Reding said.

Sweetery started providing Rock Elm Tavern patrons with desserts menu offerings in November

“Our guests are really looking forward to seeing what other treats Dawn creates, and as an added bonus our executive chef has learned a lot more about baking,” Reding said.
